SCOUT REVIEW
The West "wing" of the Shiga Kogen Prince Hotel is the largest of the three wings and features 350 Western-style rooms. While they aren't technically wings since they are quite separate buildings, it's easiest to refer to them as such.
The rooms at Shiga Kogen Prince Hotel West are the most dated of the three wings, with the rooms being fairly small by Western standards. The west wing also has both smoking and non-smoking rooms which are not separated by floor, so this is something to be aware of if you find the smell of smoking rooms offensive. The rooms are clean and relatively comfortable, with basic expected facilities such as air-conditioning, TVs, tea/coffee making facilities and ensuites, but they can be a bit of a squeeze with a group of adults plus ski gear.
The hotel features an onsen-style bath on-site as well as ski rentals, a small convenience store, coin-laundry facilities, a communal lounge area and easy access to the lifts. There are ski lockers located in the reception area of the hotel and guests can ski straight in and out from the property.
The West wing also features an on-site restaurant which offers buffet-style dining. While this is on the pricey side, it is great for those with hearty appetites who want to fill up on a range of Western and Japanese dishes. The benefit of the West wing (compared to the South and East sections) is that the hotel is just a 10-minute walk from Ichinose Village which means you have easy access to the small handful of bars and restaurants there without having to take the shuttle. This gives you additional freedom to come and go as you please.
