Scout tips
- Rooms are small by Western Standard. Twin rooms are definitely suited to 2 people not 3.
- Wifi is only available in the lobby, not in the rooms.
- If you are looking to rent equipment all wings have rentals and the quality appeared to be different in each.
- No onsen or public bath (have to go to West Wing)
- The three three Prince hotels are quite separated. There is a shuttle bus which runs at regular intervals throughout the day and early evening to provide transport between them.
- Shiga Kogen Prince Hotel is an authentic Japanese experience which may pose challenges to some travellers. Read our story about Staying in a Japanese hotel.
SCOUT REVIEW
Prince Hotel South is the most moderate of the three properties of the Shiga Kogen Prince Hotels, a ski-in, and is a ski-out property located at the base of the Yakebitaiyama resort.
The convenient location is the real highlight of this property as you can board the gondola direct from the hotel, having you up on the slopes in no time. Guests can also rent ski gear from each wing of the hotel and there are ski lockers on site. It's worth mentioning, however, that the ski lockers are located right next to reception, so it can be a little chaotic in the mornings when everyone is preparing to head up the mountain.
There is a small convenience store on site and a breakfast room serving up a Japanese and Western buffet which will have you fulled and ready for a day on the powder. Guests can also choose to dine at the hotel for dinner, although depending on what you order, this can be a little pricey.
The Shiga Kogen Prince Hotel South features 240 Western-style twin rooms (smoking and non-smoking), which are somewhat dated but still offer a comfortable place to crash after a busy day on the slopes. Each room boasts tea and coffee making facilities, a mini fridge, TV and an ensuite bathroom with a hair dryer, toothbrush, yukata pajamas and complimentary toiletries. Please note, WiFi is only available in the hotel lobby and not in the rooms.
Regardless of which wing of the Shiga Kogen Prince Hotel you choose you will have easy access to the lifts and slopes, and there is a shuttle service available offering transfers to Ichinose Village.
Who should stay here
Prince Hotel South is ideally suited to budget-conscious travellers who want the benefits of a prime ski-in, ski-out position but don't mind not having all the bells and whistles.
