Scout loves
- The stunning white interiors that are clean, fresh and bright.
- The huge 9ft (or bigger) windows in every room.
- Staff that anticipate your every need and make your stay feel highly personalized.
- The cute outdoor pool and hot tub area is great.
- Everything is included – breakfast, apres, wine, coffee, Wi-Fi parking, shuttles and more.
- The building itself has a rich history.
Scout tips
- The rooms are ‘petite’ and storage is minimal. Staff will take away your suitcases once you’ve unpacked to allow more room.
- It is 100 steps up to the slopes where you can put on your skis and quickly access the Town Lift. Alternatively, a shuttle will take you the two blocks to the lift.
- A shuttle will take you to Deer Valley and Canyons resorts on request.
- The hotel is small with only 12 rooms. For those used to the anonymity of larger hotels, it may feel strange.
- Look out for the Banksy artwork in the alleyway opposite the hotel.
- There aren’t particularly great views from any of the rooms. One or two of the rooms face a retaining wall (albeit an attractive retaining wall).
SCOUT REVIEW
Washington School House has an exclusive, boutique feel that wouldn’t be out of place in a place like SoHo or Santa Monica. This is a rarity in the world of ski resorts, where the hotels are generally quite large and impersonal. It might be unusual, but somehow the approach works – and Washington School House manages to fit right in at downtown Park City.
There’s just so much to love about this place. From the moment you step inside, the friendly and down-to-earth service you’ll receive from all the staff will make you feel special. And straight away you’ll notice how this hotel is different to its neighbors – one of the key elements is the decor, which is fresh, modern and bright. The ceilings are high and the windows soaring, while the antique furniture provides an interesting contrast against the white walls.
Although the building is fairly small and the rooms petite, the clever design makes everything feel as light and spacious as possible – just don’t bring too much luggage! Ideal for couples and solo skiers, and small families, the Washington Schoolhouse is a great option for the shorter stays. Each of the rooms vary in terms of layout and bedding - from standard king rooms that are cosy and romantic, to larger lofted 1 bedroom suites, with big bathroom, sleeper sofa, and a spiral staircase. It is a fantastic use of space, with large windows allowing the warm winter light to radiate throughout, and a wonderful living room with vaulted ceilings and incredible fireplace. The wooden floors add to the homely feel, however, it also means that noise can carry (a usual occurance in older buildings like these).
In a previous life, the hotel was known as the Washington School Inn, but in 2011 it reopened with new owners as the Washington School House. The style of the hotel in its current state is a reflection of the owner’s personal taste – a juxtaposition of old and new, with late 19th Century antiques from America, France, England and Sweden mixed in with modern accents and finishes. Make sure you take note of the photos around the walls, telling the story of the building’s original purpose – it was built in 1889 during the mining boom as a school, and it continued to function as a school until the 1930s.
One of the best things about this hotel are the common areas, which allow guests to spread out and relax outside of their rooms. The pool and hot tub area, for instance, are heaven – while a downstairs media room provides a nice place to chill out. Better yet, evening appetizers and drinks (including wine) are included in the rate, and can be ordered from anywhere in the hotel (including the hot tub)! There is also a great ski locker with heated boot warmers and ski lounge (ideal for the kids).
The Washington Schoolhouse is a one-of-a-kind boutique experience in Park City, and perfect for those seeking a more personalised ski vacation.
Who should stay here
Would suit those who appreciate highly personalized attention and like a more relaxed, down-to-earth and boutique hotel experience without skimping on the necessary luxuries.
Location
Washington School House is in a fantastic location, right in the heart of downtown Park City but a block away from the busyness of Main Street. To get to the slopes of Park City Mountain resort you can climb 100 steps up to a ski run, where you can then ski to the Town Lift to start your day. Alternatively the hotel will shuttle you to any of the three resort bases.

About Park City
Park City has a combination of several elements that make it one of the best ski resorts in North America. Not only is it a world-class ski mountain but it’s a charming and happening town, all within 35 minutes of a major airport. There aren’t many places you can fly to in the morning and be skiing in the afternoon. Park City is also famous for hosting a third of the events during the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, as well as the annual Sundance Film Festival that sees the town bursting at the seams while the well-heeled and famous party. When a gondola was built connecting neighbouring Canyons resort to Park City Resort the area became one and the name Canyons was eventually dropped. Park City Mountain now offers a mammoth amount of terrain to explore (with two village bases - Mountain Village and Canyons Village), exceptional facilities for families, and lodging options to suit all budgets.
