SCOUT REVIEW
All right, we’ll be honest. When Scout visited Trailhead, we took one look at the outside of the building and wanted to run. Why, we asked, would anyone want to stay in this big building, separated from all the action, with roads circling all around it and right next to a giant parking lot?
This question was answered the moment we (somewhat reluctantly) stepped inside – and since then Trailhead has emerged as one of our favorite places to stay in Steamboat.
Unlike the many privately-owned condos that proliferate the area, all of the condos within Trailhead are furnished in exactly the same way. (Which makes a nice change from all the individually-owned condos Scout has seen – some tastefully decorated, but some bordering on horrific).
The best way we could describe the style is ‘simple, modern, urban and inoffensive’. Think: a color scheme of green and light brown, complemented with dark wooden floorboards, stone fireplaces, granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. Plus there are windows everywhere, letting in tons of light and providing mountain vistas in all directions. While they’re not quite the most spectacular views in Steamboat, every window generally frames something pleasant – whether it’s the slopes in the distance, or the valley, although occasionally that pesky parking lot gets in the view, but somehow doesn’t spoil it.
The condos are all large, and even the studio rooms would provide enough room for a couple to comfortably stay for a week. And if you’re lucky, you’ll get a bathroom with an enormous ‘wet edge’ bathtub, so you can enjoy a serious soak at the end of a hard day’s skiing.
Scout can book individual units at Trailhead Lodge, so you know exactly what bedding and view you're going to get.
Trailhead boasts typical condo amenities including a picnic area with grills and firepit, a boot drying room, ski rack storage, and small games room. However, guests at Trailhead are provided access to the amazing amenities right next door at Wildhorse Meadows, which include a large heated outdoor pool, three hot tubs, a fitness center, a game room, an outdoor firepit. An on-demand shuttle is also available to take you anywhere you want to go in Steamboat, including downtown.
And while, yes, the location is somewhat removed from the village base area (the indirect road system doesn’t help), a gondola has been built specifically to serve the guests at Trailhead, which is located literally just outside the back door. Your skis will be waiting there for you each morning, and then the gondola will whisk you to the ski base area in a matter of minutes. This makes Trailhead particularly convenient for families who want easy access to the ski school.
As an added bonus, the gondola runs well into the night – meaning it’s easy to access the village’s restaurants and bars without the need for a car or shuttle – that is, unless, you’re carving it up on the slopes at night skiing!
Who should stay here
Trailhead would suit couples or families wanting a condo that is convenient to the slopes, and who aren’t willing to risk the prospect of renting an apartment with hideous ‘mountain rustic’ décor.
Location
The area is described as ‘Wildhorse Meadows’ – it’s just downhill from the main base area and not easy to walk to due to the road configurations. However, there is a gondola just outside the property that will take you right to the base area. Some people may not like the isolated feel, while others will love the less hectic location. The hotel runs complimentary shuttle busses to take you anywhere, including downtown.
About Steamboat
Steamboat Ski Resort is located in northwestern Colorado about a 4-hour drive from Denver. Don’t let the more isolated location turn you off – it works in its favor since it creates a town with a unique character, away from the weekend hoards that flock to resorts closer to Denver. And with endless intermediate terrain, tons of extra activities, and a fantastic après scene, Steamboat makes a great choice.
