SCOUT REVIEW
The Phoenix Chalets are the perfect solution for groups of families or friends who are looking for a self-catered, luxurious home-away-from-home in Hakuba. You’ll be well looked after, too, by the knowledgeable and friendly staff.
Located in the lower part of the Lower Wadano area, these chalets feel secluded and private. Yet much of Hakuba is within walking distance – including the Happo Village center and the Lower Wadano restaurants and bars. Additionally, the hotel’s own private shuttle runs to the Happo-one Goryu ski resorts (there are two morning pick-ups and two in the afternoon). PLUS, the public shuttles for all the ski areas leave from the Tokyu Hotel just up the road.
While the word ‘chalet’ tends to conjure images of A-frame houses nestled among pine trees, the Phoenix Chalets are more like modern townhomes. This isn’t a bad thing, it’s just something to be aware of in case you were really looking forward to a European-style chalet experience.
These ‘chalets’ are only a few years old, and are furnished in a contemporary style with large smart TVs, Netflix and Bose sound docks. The rooms are spacious, and the kitchens are fully equipped – providing everything you need to make dinner for a large group.
The modern alpine style – incorporating natural finishes in wood and slate – extends throughout. In the three bedroom apartments, the bathrooms feature lovely big baths that can be used much like your own private onsen. There are also washing machines and dryers in each chalet as well as drying rooms with ski storage facilities.
Who should stay here
The Phoenix Chalets would be great for more discerning guests who want self-catered facilities and enough room to spread out.
Location
The Phoenix Chalets are situated in the lower part of Lower Wadano. You can walk to all the restaurants and bars in Happo Village down a hill that can be icy (about 7 minutes’ walk). It’s also a bit dark at night, so you may prefer a taxi home. The Wadano village restaurants and bars are all within easy walking distance. The hotel is about 350 m from the Kokasi lift – about a 10 minute walk along a fairly busy road. But the hotel provides a shuttle service to the Happo-one gondola and Goryu resort each morning and afternoon. The public ski shuttles run from the Tokyu Hotel (which is up the road from the Phoenix Chalets).
- <10 min walk to lifts
- Hotel shuttle provided
