Scout loves
- The views from the mountain-facing rooms are the best in Hakuba.
- The indoor and outdoor onsen are great.
- There is an onsite ski rental facility.
- Shuttle busses to all resorts stop right outside the hotel entrance.
- The hotel has a luxury Japanese vibe, with some Western luxuries.
Scout tips
- The breakfast is a big buffet style and includes freshly cooked omelettes.
- The Japanese restaurant is of outstanding quality. Eating in the lounge is also good, and better value.
- Although all rooms have Western mattresses, some people find the beds hard.
- The outdoor onsen is closed when snowing (sadly).
SCOUT REVIEW
Located in the heart of the Wadano area, the Hakuba Tokyu Hotel is large, luxurious and offers the full-service experience.
The hotel was built in 1959, but underwent a major rebuild for the 1998 Winter Olympics and it has been refreshed several times since the games. Despite this, a more discerning guest may find some parts of the hotel a little dated, though some rooms have undergone a recent refresh.
However there are so many great things about Tokyu Hotel in Hakuba. Firstly, it gives you true Japanese hospitality and charm all the way – the staff here are friendly and efficient and will go out of their way to help you. Secondly, the facilities are handy for skiers – there’s an onsite ski rental and repair service (it’s also across the road from Rhythm rentals which, in our opinion, offers better quality rental equipment), a big ski locker room, lovely onsen (both indoor and out) and an ‘Esthetic Salon’ (aka full service spa). The third great thing is the restaurants; there’s a fancy Japanese restaurant called Manyo and a French restaurant called Chamonix. If you’re looking for a nice place to relax and unwind, the lounge and bar area has a large log fire, and a very attentive cocktail waiter. It also serves up some tasty food.
Finally, Habuka Tokyu’s location is great. It is situated in the quiet Lower Wadano area, so there are several great restaurants and bars to choose from (that provide cheaper alternatives to the hotel’s own). You can also walk 10-minutes down the hill to the main Happo-One village with more restaurants and bars. Meanwhile, the slopes at Happo-one are technically within walking distance, but it will take you about 10 minutes. A better option would be to catch a shuttle bus from the front entrance of the hotel, which will take you to a variety of different resorts (Goryu, Hakuba 47, Iwatake, Happo-one and Sanosaka). The shuttle service is also handy for families, as there are shuttles to the Sakka Slope (that has a child care center and a ski school).
In keeping with the overall theme of ‘great’ – you won’t be disappointed by the rooms. Sure, they’re not as quite luxurious and tasteful as the Four Seasons, but they’re spacious and comfortable, and those on the mountain side (which attract a premium) have undoubtedly the best views in Hakuba. Some have had a recent refresh too, with a fresh theme of pale wood, white, grey and lime green. Hopefully you’ll get clear weather during your stay so you can fully appreciate the spectacular alps stretching out in front of you. (If you don’t pay for a mountain view, the rooms on the other side of the building – on the upper floors – have nice views of rolling hills).
And to top it all off, there’s even some fun memorabilia from the Olympic Games for you to look at in the lobby.
Who should stay here
Hakuba Tokyu Hotel is great for couples or families wanting the services of a big scale, luxurious hotel, with convenient access to everything (including the ski resorts).
Location
Hakuba Tokyu Hotel is located in the Lower Wadano area, so is close to a selection of restaurants, bars and shops. Walking to the slopes of Happo-one takes about 10 minutes. However, there are many regular shuttle buses to different ski resorts in the area. You can walk down the hill to Happo village but it can be a slippery/sloppy walk, depending on how cold it is, and takes around 10-15 minutes.
- <10 min walk to lifts
- On or close to public shuttle route
