SCOUT REVIEW
For those heading off the beaten path and looking for a traditional ryokan and wonderful Japanese hospitality, Chalet La Neige is a great choice, particularly for families.
With only 12 rooms on site, including Western-style rooms with single beds (twin and triple share available) and Japanese-style tatami rooms, it offers a boutique hotel feel in Minakami. Rooms can sleep up to 5 guests, with the addition of a sofa bed. They're basic but comfortable, although none of the rooms offer a private bathroom. There are two large communal onsen for guests to use which can be booked for private use during the week.
The building is surrounded by natural forest, offering calm winter atmosphere throughout. The ryokan is warm and welcoming, with natural wooden tones throughout, and a great little bar area and cosy nook with fireplace to sit with a good book. Breakfast is included daily, and you can choose a half-board option to include dinner daily (fantastic Japanese inspired French cuisine) and recommended by Scout as there are limited options for eating out in Hougaigi). The famous Takaragawa Onsen, largest outdoor hot pools in Japan, is located nearby, and be sure to ask the front desk for a discounted entry ticket.
Chalet La Neige is in a great location, with the Houdaigi Ski Resort slopes directly across the road. The chalet boasts luggage storage, changing rooms and parking for free, for those arriving early or departing late and wanting to hit the slopes.
Who should stay here
Chalet La Neige is perfect for a family or a few families travelling together, who seek traditional ryokan lodging in Minakami. Suited to more independent families who are happy to make their own entertainment as there is limited nightlife in the area.
