Aspen Snowmass announces new Hero's terrain
Feb 28, 2024
For the first time in almost 40 years, Aspen Snowmass has undergone a terrain expansion and installed a new high speed chairlift, increasing skiable acreage at the resort's leading mountain. Boasting over 1,220 vertical feet and more than 150 acres of new chutes, glades and trails, the expansion is the biggest addition to the resort area since the opening of the Silver Queen Gondola in 1985.
Why the name, Hero's? In a wonderful ode to the history of Aspen Snowmass, the new name (formerly referred to as Pandora's) aims to honour all of the people who played an instrumental part in bringing the project to life, alongside those who have had significant ties to the terrain throughout Aspen's enduring history. There are runs dedicated to the first female ski instructor Elli Iselin, to the 10th Mountain soldier Percy Rideout, and to ski patrol members like Eric Kinsman and Corey Brettman. In addition, the family of Jim Crown, whose vision and leadership pathed the way for the new terrain, has chosen other trail names that honour his life and love for the town of Aspen (we personally like the double black diamond ski run aptly named 'E.E.K!').
The addition not only helps to diversify Aspen Mountain's terrain on offer to skiers, it offers more skiing on the upper portion of the mountain and the north-facing high elevation of the slopes (all above 10,000 ft) is ideal for maintaining snow conditions during those seasons of low snowfall.
The new terrain and chairlift opened for the 2023/24 winter season.
