SCOUT REVIEW
A.I.R. Myoko (AIR standing for Artists In Residence) is a ski-to-door property in the Akakura Onsen Ski Resort with the ideal combination of Japanese and Western facilites. Owned and managed by an Australian/Japanese couple it is a wonderful combination of East meets West and casual luxury.
It's clear from the moment you step through the door that the design here has been carefully thought about, and the minimalist boutique styling sets a really calm tone. This works perfectly with the quiet location of the property, just two minutes from the main street yet peaceful and still at night.
The rooms are Japanese in style, with tatami floors, low tables, sliding doors and large windows to let the outside in. However, they are also notably spacious for Japanese rooms and feature comfortable Western-style beds. A.I.R. Myoko also boasts on-site onsens, with traditional timber baths placed slopeside so you can watch skiers coming down the mountain as you bathe.
A.I.R also has a private cottage next door which is suitable for larger groups looking for self contained accommodation. It is also done in a similar style.
While arriving at A.I.R. Myoko on foot with your bags can be a little difficult, as soon as you've got your skis on it's a different story. The hotel is a true ski-in, ski-out property and, depending on the snow levels and your speed, you could ski right up to the front door! The hotel is well placed between two ski runs and close to the base of the lifts and ski school so getting out on the slopes is simple and quick.
The food at A.I.R. Myoko is exceptional year after year, with different 'chefs in residence' coming to display their flair of cooking with local ingredients. The menu is plant-based and offers both Japanese and Western breakfast options and there is even a 'degustation' tasting menu for evenings where you can dine on a whole host of different dishes. If you wish, the staff are happy to pair wines to each course too, so you can have a real fine dining experience.
As A.I.R. Myoko is a boutique arty hotel, it's nice to make the most of the on-site gallery which displays a collection of artwork from a different 'artist in residence' each year.
Who should stay here
A.I.R. Myoko is ideal for couples looking for a stylish art hotel with a perfect location for the slopes. It's great for those seeking a ski-in, ski-out hotel in Myoko with a boutique feel and an amazing on-site restaurant.
