SCOUT REVIEW
Lodge Denbey is bursting with tradition, from European alpine exteriors to classic Japanese tatami mat interior styling, the hotel is a lovely place to kick back, relax and enjoy the slopes of the Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort.
The location of Lodge Denbey is one of its highlights thanks to its ski-in, ski-out position which allows you to save time travelling to and from the main village when you want to ski. Speaking of which, the food at Lodge Denbey is excellent. The family-run team here grow produce on-site for the restaurant and their professionally-trained chefs cook up a storm for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. Breakfast is usually a Western affair, with eggs, bread etc. to set you up for the day. The restaurant also serves lunch and dinner which is a Western/Japanese fusion taster menu which allows you to try a whole host of different ingredients and dishes.
While the rooms at Lodge Denbey are quite small and simple (as it the case with many Japanese hotels) there are a range of options to choose between, from tatami mat rooms, to Western beds to log rooms which are great for families. Each room type (twin, triple and family) has a private ensuite and shared bathroom option so you can choose depending on your budget and preferences.
Other bonuses of Lodge Denbey are the on-site hot tub and onsen which are the perfect place to soothe your aching muscles at the end of the day. This saves you from heading out around the village to a public onsen - something your legs will thank you for the next day!
Due to its on-slope location, Lodge Denbey isn't suitable for those that wish to spend a lot of time in Nozawa Village. To access the hotel it's a five minute walk over snow to get to the moving walkway which takes you down to the top of the village, and a further 5 minute walk from there to get to the main street. Note that the moving walkway only operates during the day so getting back home in the evening is a decent grunt uphill and would take about 20-25 minutes. For your arrival and departure at the lodge, they will help take care of your luggage from the bus station, however you will need to walk.
Who should stay here
Lodge Denbey is perfect for those who want Japanese accommodation with a preference of ski-in, ski-out access to the slopes over being in the center of the village.
Location
Lodge Denbey is well located at the base of the Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort at the Hikage base area, offering guests ski-in, ski-out access. It is quite a walk to and from the village in the evening as the Yu Road moving walkway isn't working.
