Scout loves

  • The views from the Lake View rooms, which are spectacular.
  • The simple modern styling, with tasteful neutral colors.
  • The small restaurant, which offers a gourmet (though expensive) menu.
  • Staff are friendly and efficient.

Scout tips

  • The hotel is a 20 minute walk (along the lake front), or 5 minute drive from downtown Queenstown.
  • Most of the 2 bedroom apartments do not have baths.
  • The non-lake view rooms have obstructed views of the lake (plus some have unobstructed view of the mountains).
  • The hotel is split into two buildings, and access to all the rooms is via outside walkways.
  • Villa homes are currently under construction at the front of the property (as part of the hotel). This could result in some construction noise for the remainder of 2014.
  • The hotel is on the shady side of the lake, and rooms don’t get much (if any) direct sunlight.

The Rees is one of Queenstown’s favorite hotels and it’s easy to see why. First and foremost, there are the incredible views – this hotel is the perfect grandstand for those wanting to sit back and stare in wonder at The Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu. Secondly, the rooms are modern, stylish and comfortable.

While it’s not as luxurious as some of the more upscale boutique hotels in the area, it’s definitely high quality and due to the hotel’s slightly out-of-town location, it’s a great value option for those who want a decent place to stay without an exorbitant price tag.

From the moment you step into the welcoming lobby area, you’ll be treated to those stunning views – complete with a relaxing longue area where you can peruse the extensive wine and cocktail list from the adjoining bar.

Meanwhile, the rooms are luxuriously decorated and comfortable – even the smallest hotel room feels relatively spacious thanks to the sofa and small living area. Even better are the Italian bathrooms that have high-end finishes and under-floor heating.

Of the 150 rooms, 90 are 1,2 or 3 bedroom apartments and 60 are hotel rooms. A few things are worth noting:

  • Most of the apartments do not have baths, however most hotel rooms have large spa baths with views of the lake through a glass wall into the bedroom.
  • Some of the 3 bedroom apartments consist of a 2 bedroom apartment with an adjoining hotel room.
  • Although the Executive 2 bedroom apartments have a bigger living area than the Standard apartments, Scout actually feels the Standard have a better layout – the main bedroom has the same amazing views as the living areas so you can wake up looking at the mountains. In the Executive style, the bedroom is at the back of the living area.
  • All apartments have a full kitchen, a gas fireplace and a washer and dryer.

If we are to be really picky, the one disappointment is that big walls have been built around the balconies to ensure guests’ privacy, at the sacrifice of offering uninterrupted views from the living areas, and making the whole room feel a bit tunnel like.

For those seeking full-service luxury, there may be some drawbacks with this hotel; specifically the small TVs in the rooms and the lack of a pool, hot tub or spa (for massages etc) – plus the gym is small. However Scout’s been told there is a bigger gym under construction and massage services can be ordered and enjoyed in the privacy of your own room.

If you are looking for a hotel in the center of Queenstown’s action, this is not the hotel for you. However The Rees does offer a complimentary shuttle to town (once every hour until 10.15pm) and there are plenty of taxis. If it’s warm enough you can walk 20 minutes along a lovely lakefront path to town, or bike five minutes. Having your own car would be a good option to give you more flexibility, and parking at the hotel is free.
