Scout loves

  • Family owned for 40 years.
  • The location. It’s prime Vail real estate in the middle of the village and just minutes from the gondola.
  • Lovely, peaceful creek-side views from the rooms at the back. Mountain views over rooftops from the higher rooms at the front.
  • No hidden fees. No resort fees. No charge for Wi-Fi. No charge for parking – that’s all free and so is breakfast.

Scout tips

  • The rooms are basic. Walls may be a little thin.
  • Some of the front rooms look directly onto the pool but have glimpses of mountains above the roof of the opposite lodge.
  • Helen Fritch started the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens which are a must see if you happen to be in Vail during summer.
  • ‘Sitzmark’ is the German term used for the mark one leaves behind in the snow after a fall. Apparently many years ago, before groomers smoothed things over for us, there were signs around resorts requesting that people please fill in their sitzmarks.
  • Only deluxe fireplace rooms have fire places.

SCOUT REVIEW

Many years ago, the Fritch family from Chicago was looking for a new path in life – and it was their love of the outdoors and skiing that brought them to Vail. Once there, Bob and Helen Fritch found a business opportunity in the Sitzmark lodge and moved there with their three daughters. Forty years later, they’re still there and one of their daughters, Jeanne (who was in middle school at the time), is now the general manager.

At a youthful 90 years of age, Bob Fritch may no longer ski, but he’s still involved in the day-to-day running of the lodge. And if you’re there on a Monday night, you’ll even be invited to his top-floor apartment for happy hour.

This is the reason why Scout loves Sitzmark. The family history is evident in the love and care that is taken with everything. Well that, and its great-value price tag – which is almost an anomaly in Vail. (Note: mid-range Vail hotels come with a much higher mid-range price tag than most other resorts).

This is not the typical Vail 5 star luxury. There’s no concierge to carry your skis for you, and no valet to park your car. And the furnishings are simple. But if you’re willing to look past such details, Sitzmark is one of the best deals going in the village. They will still look after you with just as much care as any major hotel (but with family pride), and the hotel is located right in the midst of the action – minutes from the gondola. It also features a pool and hot tub to soothe those tired skiing muscles.
