SCOUT REVIEW
If you are looking for an authentic and traditional Japanese experience in Myoko Kogen, your dream will turn into a reality when you stay at Ryokan Okayama Hotel. It has a few western style amenities but has a very traditional Japanese atmosphere. The hotel was established 60 years ago and is managed and owned by Shintaro-san and the Okayama family – apart from the beautiful hotel, they are the reason why this hotel is one of Scout’s favorites in the area. They are so accommodating, friendly and their children who play in the hotel’s lobby area are so adorable! They really make you feel you are part of the family.
Ryokan Okayama has 14 rooms, 7 of which were recently renovated, with the rest due for renovation soon. The rooms are very spacious by Japanese standards. Accommodations vary from Japanese single tatami style rooms to beautiful combination rooms which have western style mattresses on raised platforms and tatami mat areas with small living area equipped with comfortable seating. These rooms have spacious Western style bathrooms. There are two rooms with capsule showers which are very common in Japanese hotels but you might not have any need for it as the hotel has two onsens, a private and a public one.
The hotel's private onsen is ideal for couples who want to have exclusive use of an onsen, all for no extra charge. The hotel has a public onsen which have separate rooms for men and women. The water for both onsens is sourced from a natural spring and is rich in minerals. It affords guests a very invigorating bath after a day of skiing.
You must not miss the Japanese style breakfast in Ryokan Okayama. You can request for a Western Style breakfast but if you are in for a Japanese dining experience, the breakfast exemplifies what a delicious and flavorful Japanese breakfast is. Dinner can be requested and you must reserve your dinner a day before. The dinner dishes are exceptional and have a few set menus to choose from including tempura soba, sashimi, shabu shabu, sukiyaki and the full Japanese Kaiseki dinner which is a set course menu with lots of little dishes. Definitely an experience not to be missed.
The hotel has a very beautiful lounge area where you can relax and hang out after a day of skiing. You can also buy beer in the vending machine if you are feeling a little thirsty.
It’s important to be aware of Ryokan Okayama’s out-of-the-way location. It’s down a hill from the base of the Akakura Kanko Gondola base area in a quiet street. Shintaro-san will take you to the ski area or drive you around when he is available, however it’s not always guaranteed. Having your own set of wheels here would certainly be an advantage (and would allow you to easily explore many of the area's ski resorts).
Ryokan Okayama will make you feel so at home that you will no doubt get a little sad as you say your goodbyes to Shinatro-san and the Okayama family.
Who should stay here
Ryokan Okayama in Myoko Kogen is ideal for couples who want to enjoy a traditional Japanese style ambiance. It is not recommended for families because of its location, or younger folk who want to be close to all the action - unless in either of those cases have your own car.
Location
Ryokan Okayama is a 5-minute walk uphill to the Akakura Kanko ski lifts. It will take you approximately a 15-minute walk uphill to the Myoko Kogen main village. The hotel’s shuttle can pick you and bring you back to the bus station. The owner can usually give a lift to the slopes in the mornings, and it is fairly easy to walk down the hill to the hotel after skiing.
On this Myoko Kogen Village map Ryokan Okayama is located in the center.

About Myoko Kogen
Myoko Kogen combines so many excellent elements into one package; several great ski resorts, endless powder snow, relatively thin crowds, plenty of (permitted) tree skiing, a superb ski school, a friendly, traditional Japanese town, a range of accommodation options and easy access. It’s not surprising then that Myoko’s popularity has soared over the past few years.

Scout Booking Terms & Conditions
- Availability: Booking of all packages & accommodation is subject to availability at time of confirmation of package option by customer.
- Rate includes: All associated taxes. Some hotels charge extra fees for parking, cots, rollaways etc. Such fees can be confirmed on request based on your requirements.
- Payment Schedule:
- Deposit: 25% of the full amount is due WITHIN 7 DAYS OF CONFIRMATION to secure the booking.
- Final Balance: Invoice will be issued for the remaining balance 80 days prior to departure. PAYMENT IS DUE 70 DAYS PRIOR to departure. Failure to pay by 70 days may result in the auto-cancellation of accommodation by the accommodation provider or late payment fees.
- Bookings within 70 days: Full payment is required within 7 days to secure the booking.
- Variations: In some circumstances suppliers may have different payment policies to the above. Additionally some Early Bird deals require full payment by or soon after the book-by date. In these instances Scout will clearly communicate any variances prior to confirmation.
- Cancellation Policy:
- All deposits are non-refundable once received.
- For balance payments made within 70-45 days prior to the trip the deposit amount is non-refundable.
- No refund for total amount for cancellations 45 days or less prior to arrival and no-shows. In unexpected, unfortunate circumstances (family death etc) Scout will work to negotiate with the supplier for a full or partial refund, however this is not guaranteed. We recommend taking travel insurance to make sure you are covered. Cancelling due to weather, missed travel connections or lack of snow is not considered an unexpected circumstance and is one of the risks you must wear as part of taking a ski trip. Unless the supplier has a snow guarantee or weather cancellation policy, Scout will not refund any part of the package due to these factors.
- Variations: Please note that some hotels may have stricter policies (such as no refund within 60 days) and we are required to pass on these policies. We will communicate any varations to the above cancellation policy prior to confirmation of booking.
- Changes Policy:
- Once bookings are confirmed and deposit is paid service fees will apply for every amendment to existing elements, late final payment and travel document re-issue in addition to fees charged by suppliers
- In a few instances we purchase products through third party providers. If you change part of your package whilst at a destination, the 3rd party provider may have a different refund policy to that of the supplier in the destination. Wherever possible we will work to recover any refunds that come from a change at the destination, however it is not guaranteed.
- Surcharges: Scout does not charge any additional fees for the booking. Prices quoted are for cash (bank transfer) payments only. Credit card payments (Amex, Visa or Mastercard only) will be subject to 1.8% surcharge.
- Booking Currency: Scout will quote and charge in one currency of your choice from AUD, USD, CAD, JPY, EUR or GBP only.
- Currency Exchange Policy: If you book an international destination all remaining balances are subject to change (based on currency fluctuations) until the final payment has been processed. This can go either way (if your currency gets stronger you will be invoiced less!). We will confirm at the time of invoice what the final amount is, based on the exchange rate at that time. Should you wish to pay the balance earlier (prior to when it’s actually due) to secure that current exchange rate you are welcome to request the final invoice at any time. Once payments have been made (deposit or final balance), no refunds will be given for changes in the amount of what that payment would be, based on currency changes at any time prior to your trip.
- Travel Insurance: Once your booking is confirmed, we strongly recommend taking out travel insurance as it will often cover the cost of cancelled reservations.
