The Post Hotel & Spa in Lake Louise is the type of place to stay if you’re looking to really spoil yourself. It’s luxurious, charming and personal, despite being a fairly large hotel.

In 1942 when it first opened, this hotel was known as Lake Louise Ski Lodge. It changed owners and names several times until 1978 when it was bought by the Schwarz family from Switzerland, who maintain ownership to this day. Andre Schwarz originally came to the area to teach skiing at Lake Louise, and later he became an influential figure in the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance – drafting many of his teachings at the Post Hotel. It was completely rebuilt in 1987 to become the luxurious, full-service hotel that it is today.

Naturally, the first criticism many people have of this hotel is that it’s right on the train line. This is the case for most of the hotels in the Lake Louise area and indeed many in Banff, but it is true that The Post is especially close. The train line is busy day and night with very long freight trains that insist on regularly blowing their horns. But if you can put up with the noise, then a stay at the Post Hotel & Spa will be wonderful.

Most of the 94 rooms feature small living areas, and every room has a whirlpool tub. The hotel doesn’t hide the problem with the train noise; the railway-facing rooms are on what is called the ‘discounted side’. The suites are a real treat since they have an extra living space with deep armchairs beside log fires. Each day, housekeeping cleans and resets the fire, ready for you to come home to after a cold day on the slopes.

The facilities at The Post Hotel & Spa are luxurious – there’s a beautiful indoor pool and hot tub and a co-ed steam room. There’s also a gym and a full service spa.

Dining at The Post is a great experience with a superb restaurant and a small ‘Stübli’ (a traditional Swiss restaurant serving fondue), as well as a pub with a more casual restaurant.
