  • Request a room with a valley view

  • Double rooms are a little bigger yet feel smaller because of their layout
  • The New Prince is a Japanese Hotel experience which may pose challenges to some travellers. Read our story about Staying in a Japanese hotel.

SCOUT REVIEW

Built in 1988 and updated through the years, the New Furano Prince Hotel is nestled in an isolated location on the Furano slopes. It is a big and busy hotel with 427 rooms.

The style of the New Furano Prince Hotel is a modern (yet slightly dated) Japanese style – lots of pastel colors are used extensively throughout the hotel. All of the rooms are equipped with a TV (which may only have Japanese channels), fridge, a safe, electric kettle and telephone. The rooms either have a view of the slopes, woods, and valley (which Scout prefers).

Although the hotel is situated well away from any town or village, you will never go hungry. It has numerous restaurants such as the Restaurant Karamatsu, Sushi Restaurant, Dinner Buffet Restaurant, Top floor restaurant, and the hotel’s Main Dining Room where an extensive breakfast buffet spread of Japanese and western dishes is served. You can also find snacks, sweets and beverages at the Coffee Shop Lavender, the Mori no Tokei "Forest Clock" Café which is just a 5-minute walk from the hotel, Coffee House "Chu Chu no Ie" located in the center of the Ningle Terrace arts and crafts village, and the Prince Bakery Pan Kobo which is just beside the hotel.

If you want a drink (or a lot of drinks), you can have some at the rooftop bar where for 2000 yen, you can drink as much as you want for two hours (subject to change). If you want to have some drinks with a cigarette or a cigar, you can walk to the hilariously named Soh's BAR For Miserable Smokers, a secluded log and stone cabin located in the forest about seven minutes’ walk from the hotel.

The hotel has some good facilities such as an indoor onsen, open-air onsen and Finish sauna as well as a full spa with massage treatments. Scout loves the beautifully-packed cakes and cookies in the on-site convenience store.

Although there are a few small drawbacks, the New Furano Prince Hotel delivers what it promises, a great location for skiing, very comfortable accommodations, and a good variety of restaurants and cafes.

Who should stay here

The New Furano Prince Hotel is great for older couples who do not mind being in an "peaceful" but somewhat isolated location and for families that want a convenient location right on the slopes.

Scout Customer Reviews

My experience with the hotel was positive. Although the hotel was a bit dated, but everything was maintained well. Breakfast was good and plentiful, and I loved the locker system for skiing equipment. Only down side was that the onsen was not spring mineral water, but that didn't stop me from going every night.
