Scout loves

  • The chance to rub shoulders with big time European and North American ski racers.
  • Manicured lawns that lead down to the lake.
  • The feeling of space – the rooms and facilities are nicely spread out over a large area ensuring every room gets a lakefront view.
  • Friendly ducks that make themselves at home outside your lakefront doors.

Scout tips

  • Edgewater is not in town. It’s a lovely 20 minute stroll along the lake or a quick drive.
  • The spa area “might” be getting a much-needed upgrade soon – at the moment the hotel’s two hot tubs are in an enclosed cage-like structure.
  • Furnishings are dated.
  • Mixed reviews about the food.

The accommodation options in Wanaka are an odd mix: it’s either expensive lodges or budget to mid-range motels and apartments. The town itself is booming thanks to its prime location beside the beautiful Lake Wanaka and nearby mountains (which are, incidentally, great for skiing). Yet Wanaka is still crying out for a good mid-range hotel – and until someone decides to capitalize on this opportunity, Edgewater remains your best choice.

Edgewater is not luxurious – it’s simply decorated and a fussy customer might find the furnishings a bit dated. This said, the hotel rooms are spacious and the suites have large kitchens.

The main hotel area has a restaurant and bar, and the large wooden beams almost make it feel like an authentic ski chalet. We’re also pleased to report that the bar has a good selection of après ski drinks and snacks.

Situated on the outskirts of town, Edgewater lives up to its name – with all rooms providing views of the lake and the snowcapped mountains. During winter it’s a busy and happening place, especially during the school holiday period in July. And in August, large groups of ski teams from the Northern Hemisphere use Edgewater as a base for their summer training sessions at nearby Treble Cone. If it’s good enough for the Austrian Ski Team, it’s good enough for Scout!
